Cinema
Subterrain was a free indie cinema that ran (once a month)
from January 2004 to May 2006. It's mandate was to promote independent
cinema culture and to create a space where indie and cult film enthusiasts
could watch rare films and performances; as well meet others who shared
these interests. I am very proud to say that in its 2 plus years of operation,
that
Cinema Subterrain was not simply a place to watch movies. It became a
monthly event where the same people would come spend time together
in a wonderful social atmosphere. People made food and shared it, giving
the evening an ad hoc pot puck feel. These weren't just moviegoers off
to the local googleplex, these were friends. It was a wonderful community.
Cinema Subterrain was located in the basement of LA Mood's Comics and Games.
It was usually a space reserved for gamers, except once a month, we folded
up
the tables, erected a screen and projector, and re-arranged the chairs and
couches.
It wouldn't have been possible without Gord and Carol Mood's support, nor
without the support of Teresa Tarasewicz, owner of City Lights Bookshop. Oh
and A.W. Morgan, a great friend and "transportation coordinator"
as well as
Jason Krauskopf, co-editor of the nofrequency media project.
I programmed the majority of the screenings, but also had guest programmers,
including Dion Conflict, and A.W. Morgan.
Below are some images of posters from our screenings, as well as some images of CinSub itself.
